Lukala Diamond Company mined a rough diamond weighing 1080.1 carats from its Karowei mine in Botswana, which is the fourth time that the company has obtained a huge diamond of more than 1000 carats in eight years.
This colorless IIA diamond comes from the southern Loeb of the mine and is known for its large, high-quality rough diamonds, Lukara said on Wednesday.
Since 2015, three other diamonds of the same size have been produced from AK6 blue rock ore in the southern Loeb area of the Karoway mine: 1109 carats of Leseiderarona diamonds from 2015, 1758 carats of Severo diamonds from 2019, and 1174.76 carats of split diamonds from 2021.
The company is investing $683 million in the underground expansion of the Carroway mine, which will extend the lifespan of the mine by at least 2040, a 15 year extension from the initial closure date of 2025.
